Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition where the prostate gland grows larger than normal and causes urinary complications such as frequent urination at night. This can severely impact sleep and as a result negatively impact quality of life.

What are Some of the Causes of BPH?
The exact cause is unknown to date. However, a mix of aging, hormonal changes and the cumulative effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on prostate cells is thought to be part of the root casues. DHT is a hormone derived from testosterone and it can play a role in prostate growth.

BPH or “enlarged prostate” often starts to some degree in Men after age 40 but symptoms are more prevalent in men over 50. Almost half of all men will experience BPH by their 60’s and 90% by their 80’s. It can be treated with medications or by other minimally invasive procedures such as the Urolift System or prostate artery embolization, or surgical procedures such as Transurethral Resection of the Prostate. Medications aim to relax the muscles in the prostate or reduce the size of the prostate potentially improving urine flow.
