What are Some of the Causes of Urologic Cancers?

Urologic cancers in women such as bladder cancer and urologic cancers in men impacting the prostate, kidneys and bladder for example have been linked to various factors such as smoking, exposure to certain chemicals, age, obesity, hypertension, chronic inflammation, family history, and genetic predispositions.

Prostate cancer is the most common urologic cancer with approximately 300,000 cases a year and a 10% mortality rate. Bladder cancer is the number one urologic cancer in women, and is estimated to cause around 83,190 new cases and 16,840 deaths annually, with a 5-year relative survival rate of 78.4%. Kidney cancer is twice as common in men as in women with over 80,000 cases per year with a 5-year relative survival rate of approximatley 78%. Other urologic cancers include Testicular cancer which is a particular concerning issue ammong younger men aged 14-35 and Urethral cancers which are considered rare making up approximately 1% of all cancers.
