Why is Labiaplasty Right for Me?

Labiaplasty has become an increasingly popular procedure because of its effectiveness, safety, and high satisfaction rate. It is an in-office surgical procedure that reduces the size of an enlarged labia minora (labial hypertrophy), which is a common condition in adolescent and adult women. The most important factor in the procedure’s success is performing it on the right patient.

There are various indications for labiaplasty, but the most common one is discomfort and pain from a ‘bulging’ of the vagina that results in tugging or chafing of the labia minora. This can result in women and adolescent girls limiting their physical activity as even low impact activities like walking become uncomfortable. Many women will describe having to use their fingers to fold in the excess vaginal tissue, which is really the enlarged labia minora, to reduce the bulging and tugging.

Many women experience painful intercourse due to the excess skin of the labia minora. Unfortunately, this discomfort worsens as women get peri-menopausal and start experiencing vaginal dryness and atrophy.

Excess labial skin creates a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria. Vaginal yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis are common infections in women with labial hypertrophy. These infections become very difficult to treat if the root cause of the infection, which is excess labial skin, is not addressed. Labiaplasty is a definitive treatment for women suffering from chronic vaginal yeast or bacterial infections if these are caused by an enlarged labia minora.

Labiaplasty is performed in the office under local anesthesia and takes about thirty to forty-five minutes. At Golden State Urology we use a device called Tempsure Surgical to precisely cut labial tissue which results in a very short recovery time and excellent aesthetic results.
